Technical Analysis

The Red Hat security advisory RHSA-2024:4560 addresses six vulnerabilities in the java-1.8.0-openjdk packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Extended Lifecycle Support. The fixed issues include: CVE-2024-21131 (potential UTF8 size overflow), CVE-2024-21138 (excessive symbol length causing infinite loop), CVE-2024-21140 (Range Check Elimination pre-loop limit overflow), CVE-2024-21144 (Pack200 loading time increase due to improper header validation), CVE-2024-21145 (out-of-bounds access in 2D image handling), and CVE-2024-21147 (RangeCheckElimination array index overflow). These vulnerabilities relate to memory handling and validation flaws in OpenJDK 8 runtime and SDK components. The advisory rates the update as important and provides updated packages to remediate these issues.

Potential Impact

The vulnerabilities could lead to various memory safety issues such as overflows, infinite loops, and out-of-bounds accesses within the OpenJDK 8 runtime environment. These flaws may affect the stability and security of Java applications running on affected Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Extended Lifecycle Support systems. The advisory does not specify active exploitation in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released updated java-1.8.0-openjdk packages that fix these vulnerabilities. Users should apply the update as described in the advisory (https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258) and restart all running OpenJDK Java instances for the fixes to take effect. This is the official and recommended remediation.
