Description

Kerberos is a network authentication system, which can improve the security of your network by eliminating the insecure practice of sending passwords over the network in unencrypted form. It allows clients and servers to authenticate to each other with the help of a trusted third party, the Kerberos key distribution center (KDC). Security Fix(es): * krb5: GSS message token handling (CVE-2024-37371) * krb5: GSS message token handling (CVE-2024-37370) For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.

Technical Analysis

Red Hat Product Security issued an advisory (RHSA-2024:5625) for two vulnerabilities in krb5, identified as CVE-2024-37370 and CVE-2024-37371, both involving GSS message token handling in the Kerberos authentication system. The vulnerabilities affect Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 variants including Advanced Mission Critical Update Support, Update Services for SAP Solutions, and Telecommunications Update Service. The advisory rates the security impact as Moderate. Updated krb5 packages have been released to address these issues. The advisory references the CVE pages for further technical details and CVSS scores, which are not included in the advisory itself.

Potential Impact

The vulnerabilities affect the krb5 component responsible for handling GSS message tokens in Kerberos, potentially impacting the integrity or security of authentication processes. The advisory classifies the impact as Moderate. No known exploits in the wild have been reported. The vulnerabilities could affect systems relying on Kerberos for secure authentication if left unpatched.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released updated krb5 packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 variants that fix these vulnerabilities. Users should apply the security updates as described in the Red Hat advisory RHSA-2024:5625 and the referenced article https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. Since this is an official fix, applying the update fully mitigates the vulnerabilities. No additional mitigation steps are specified or required.
