Technical Analysis

This advisory covers security fixes in Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.17.38, including CVE-2024-45339, a vulnerability in the github.com/golang/glog logging library. The flaw allows an unprivileged attacker to overwrite sensitive files by exploiting predictable log file paths and planting symbolic links in widely writable directories. This improper link resolution (CWE-59) can lead to unauthorized file modification and potential bypass of security controls. The vulnerability has a Red Hat CVSS v3 score of 7.1 (High) with local attack vector, low complexity, and low privileges required. Red Hat has released updated container images and RPM packages to address this issue and advises users to upgrade accordingly.

Potential Impact

An attacker with local access and low privileges may exploit this vulnerability to overwrite sensitive files by leveraging symbolic links in writable directories where log files are created. This can compromise confidentiality and integrity by modifying files unexpectedly and potentially bypassing security mechanisms. The vulnerability does not impact availability. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released OpenShift Container Platform 4.17.38 with updated container images and RPM packages that fix this vulnerability. Users of OpenShift Container Platform 4.17 are strongly advised to upgrade to version 4.17.38 or later using the OpenShift CLI or web console as per Red Hat's upgrade instructions. No effective alternative mitigations meeting Red Hat's criteria are currently available. Applying the official update is the recommended remediation.
