Technical Analysis

This advisory covers security fixes in Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.16.47, including CVE-2024-45339, a vulnerability in the golang/glog logging library. The flaw allows an attacker with low privileges to overwrite sensitive files by exploiting predictable log file paths and planting symbolic links in widely writable directories. This improper link resolution (CWE-59) can lead to unauthorized file modification and potential bypass of security mechanisms. The vulnerability has a Red Hat CVSS v3 score of 7.1 (high severity) with local attack vector, low complexity, and no user interaction required. Red Hat advises upgrading to the fixed container images and packages in version 4.16.47. Mitigations are limited and do not meet Red Hat's criteria for broad applicability or ease of deployment.

Potential Impact

An attacker with local access and low privileges can exploit this vulnerability to overwrite arbitrary files by leveraging symbolic links in predictable log file locations. This can compromise confidentiality and integrity of the system by modifying sensitive files or bypassing security controls. The vulnerability does not impact availability. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fixed version of Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform is available in release 4.16.47. All users of OpenShift Container Platform 4.16 are strongly advised to upgrade to this version to remediate the vulnerability. No effective mitigations meeting Red Hat's criteria are currently available. Users should follow Red Hat's official upgrade instructions using the OpenShift CLI or web console as documented. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory.
