Red Hat has released updated OpenShift Virtualization v4.13 images that fix this vulnerability. It is recommended to apply these updates after ensuring all previous errata are applied. Additional mitigations include restricting RBAC permissions to limit pod/exec access to virt-launcher pods, enforcing SELinux in enforcing mode to limit file modification impact, and relying on RHCOS immutable filesystem layers to protect core OS files. Note that no current mitigation fully addresses the notify socket hijacking vector, so applying the vendor update is critical.
Description
A vulnerability in KubeVirt's safepath package used by virt-handler in OpenShift Virtualization v4.13 allows an attacker with access to a virt-launcher pod to hijack IPC socket connections by exploiting symlink dereferencing. This can lead to injection of arbitrary VM domain lifecycle events, causing incorrect VM lifecycle actions, corruption of VM state in the Kubernetes API, or crashes of the virt-handler process, resulting in denial of VM management services on the affected node. Additionally, the flaw allows unintended file ownership or permission changes on the host, though mitigated by SELinux and immutable filesystem layers in default deployments.
