AI-suggested

Users should avoid installing Python wheels from untrusted sources. It is strongly recommended not to run 'pip install' with elevated privileges such as 'sudo'. Administrators should inspect the 'entry_points.txt' file within wheels for path separators or absolute paths before installation.

Description

CVE-2026-8643 is a vulnerability in pip, the Python package installer, affecting Red Hat AI Base Images 3.0.2 (cpu). It allows a remote attacker to craft a malicious Python wheel with specially crafted entry-point names that exploit directory traversal or absolute paths. This leads to arbitrary file overwrite outside the intended installation directory, potentially impacting system integrity and availability, and possibly enabling arbitrary code execution if pip is run with elevated privileges.
