Red Hat recommends reviewing the vulnerability with a Technical Account Manager (TAM) if available. Avoid using untrusted tar archives with the vulnerable tarfile.extractall() function until a fix is released.
Description
A vulnerability exists in the Python standard library tarfile.extractall() function used in Red Hat AI Base Images 3.0.5 (TPU). This flaw allows a remote attacker to craft a malicious archive that bypasses security filters by using a hardlink referencing a symlink, enabling files to be read or written outside the intended extraction directory. This can lead to information disclosure or arbitrary file modification. Red Hat has identified that this affects the CPython tarfile module shipped in their python3 packages but not other similarly named packages or implementations.
