AI-suggested

Red Hat advises that OpenSSH clients operating in FIPS mode should avoid negotiating the diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha256 key exchange algorithm by explicitly configuring allowed key exchange algorithms in the SSH client configuration files (e.g., /etc/ssh/ssh_config or ~/.ssh/config) to exclude this algorithm. For example, set KexAlgorithms to a safe subset such as curve25519-sha256@libssh.org, ecdh-sha2-nistp256, ecdh-sha2-nistp384, ecdh-sha2-nistp521, and diffie-hellman-group14-sha1. Additionally, avoid using non-fatal client flows like ssh-keyscan against untrusted servers while FIPS mode is enabled.

Description

A double free vulnerability exists in the OpenSSH client implementation used in Red Hat AI Base Images 3.4.5 (Spyre) when operating in FIPS mode during Diffie-Hellman Group Exchange (DH-GEX) key exchange. This flaw can be exploited by a malicious SSH server to cause client process termination, resulting in a denial of service (DoS). The impact is limited to availability of the SSH client process and does not lead to broader system compromise. Exploitation requires the client to connect to a malicious or compromised SSH server. Mitigation involves disabling the vulnerable key exchange algorithm in the SSH client configuration.
