To mitigate the risk, administrators should configure OpenSSH clients operating in FIPS mode to exclude the 'diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha256' key exchange algorithm by explicitly specifying allowed algorithms in the SSH client configuration files (e.g., /etc/ssh/ssh_config or ~/.ssh/config). Additionally, avoid using non-fatal client flows such as 'ssh-keyscan' against untrusted SSH servers while FIPS mode is enabled. These mitigations reduce exposure until a fix is released.
Description
A double free vulnerability exists in the OpenSSH client when operating in FIPS mode during Diffie-Hellman Group Exchange (DH-GEX) key exchange with a malicious SSH server. This flaw can cause the client process to terminate unexpectedly, resulting in a denial of service. Exploitation requires the client to connect to a malicious or compromised SSH server. The impact is limited to availability of the SSH client process and does not lead to broader system compromise. Red Hat OpenSSH versions shipped with their products are affected. No fix is currently available, but mitigation is possible by disabling the vulnerable key exchange algorithm.
