AI-suggested

Red Hat advises not to use the --one-top-level option as the sole confinement mechanism when extracting untrusted archives. Instead, extract archives as an unprivileged user into a newly created empty directory after changing into that directory. Avoid extracting as root from sensitive directories such as /. Follow GNU tar security guidance for handling untrusted archives. Updated packages addressing this issue are available from Red Hat and should be applied when possible.

Description

A vulnerability in GNU tar affects the --one-top-level extraction option, allowing hardlink targets to escape the designated top-level directory. This can enable an attacker to write files outside the intended extraction boundary if combined with a preexisting symbolic link in the working directory. The issue only occurs when extracting untrusted archives using --one-top-level and does not affect default tar extraction without this option. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is affected, and users are advised not to rely solely on --one-top-level for confinement until fixed packages are available.
