AI-suggested
Red Hat has released updated RPM packages that fix this vulnerability. Users should apply the provided updates to device-mapper and lvm2 RPMs as detailed in the Red Hat advisory. Additionally, systems should avoid importing LVM physical volumes from untrusted sources without inspecting metadata. Access to LVM metadata should be restricted to trusted administrators, especially on shared or externally attached storage devices. Since a fix is available, applying the update is the recommended remediation.
Description
A vulnerability in libdm's Logical Volume Manager (LVM) metadata configuration parser allows a local attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) by crafting deeply nested metadata structures. This leads to uncontrolled recursion and stack exhaustion, causing LVM commands that read the metadata to crash. The issue affects systems where untrusted users can write or modify LVM metadata. Mitigation involves restricting write access to LVM metadata and inspecting imported physical volumes from untrusted sources. A fix has been released in updated Red Hat Hardened Images RPMs.
