A fix for this vulnerability is currently being pursued by Red Hat but is not yet available. No effective mitigations meeting Red Hat's criteria for ease of use, applicability, and stability are currently available. Users should apply the update once released. Monitoring Red Hat advisories for the patch release is recommended.

Description

A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in nginx's ngx_http_core_module when configured with specific alias and rewrite directives referencing the $request_filename variable. This flaw allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to send crafted HTTP requests that may cause denial of service by crashing worker processes or potentially enable arbitrary code execution on systems with ASLR disabled or bypassed. The vulnerability affects Red Hat Hardened Images and related products. A fix is being pursued but not yet available. Exploitation requires a specific server configuration and conditions beyond the attacker's control.
