AI-suggested
Red Hat has released updated GDB RPM packages as part of the Red Hat Hardened Images update to fix this vulnerability. Users should apply these updates to remediate the issue. Additional mitigations include avoiding opening untrusted or unknown ELF binaries in GDB without first stripping the .stab and .stabstr sections using objcopy, checking binaries for STABS sections with readelf before debugging, using alternative debuggers like LLDB that do not support STABS, and running GDB in sandboxed or containerized environments when analyzing untrusted binaries. GDB 18 will remove STABS support entirely, and GCC 13 no longer emits STABS debug information, reducing future exposure.
Description
A vulnerability in GDB's STABS debug format parser (CVE-2026-13732) allows an out-of-bounds write due to a linked list removal bug in the handling of C++ destructor member functions. An attacker can craft a malicious ELF binary with specially crafted .stab and .stabstr sections that trigger this flaw when opened and inspected in GDB, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution within the GDB process. This affects all currently supported Red Hat product streams shipping GDB. Mitigations include avoiding opening untrusted binaries in GDB without stripping debug sections and using alternative debuggers or sandboxing GDB. GDB 18 will remove STABS support entirely, and GCC has removed STABS emitting since version 13.
