Red Hat has released updated RPM packages (gd-2.3.3-22.1.hum1 and related) that fix this vulnerability. Users should apply these updates as soon as possible. No practical mitigation other than updating the package is currently available.
Description
A buffer overflow vulnerability (CVE-2026-9672) exists in the libgd library used by Red Hat Hardened Images RPMs when processing specially crafted GIF files. This flaw can cause an application crash leading to denial of service. Although arbitrary code execution is theoretically possible, it is considered highly unlikely due to typical image decompression and pixel manipulation destroying the exploit payload. Red Hat has released updated RPM packages to address this issue.
