Apply the Red Hat security update that includes openscap-1.4.5-2.1.hum1 and related RPMs as provided by Red Hat Hardened Images. Avoid extracting or decomposing untrusted SCAP Source DataStream files. If processing externally supplied datastreams is necessary, perform the operation in an isolated directory using a dedicated unprivileged user or container sandbox with strictly bounded write privileges. This limits the potential impact of path traversal exploitation.
Description
A path traversal vulnerability (CVE-2026-85518) was found in OpenSCAP used in Red Hat Hardened Images RPMs. The flaw allows unauthorized file creation or modification outside the intended directory when decomposing crafted Source DataStream files. Exploitation requires an administrator or automated workflow to explicitly process a malicious datastream. The impact is limited by filesystem permissions and typical usage scenarios. A security update is available addressing this issue.
