Source: GCVE Database
Vendor/Project: Red Hat Product Security
Product: Red Hat

Description

The rsync utility enables the users to copy and synchronize files locally or across a network. Synchronization with rsync is fast because rsync only sends the differences in files over the network instead of sending whole files. The rsync utility is also used as a mirroring tool. Security Fix(es): * rsync: Path traversal vulnerability in rsync (CVE-2024-12087) * rsync: --safe-links option bypass leads to path traversal (CVE-2024-12088) * rsync: Race Condition in rsync Handling Symbolic Links (CVE-2024-12747) For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.

Technical Analysis

The rsync utility in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 contains three security vulnerabilities: CVE-2024-12087 (path traversal), CVE-2024-12088 (--safe-links option bypass leading to path traversal), and CVE-2024-12747 (race condition in handling symbolic links). These vulnerabilities could be exploited to perform unauthorized path traversal attacks or cause race conditions during file synchronization. Red Hat has issued a security advisory (RHSA-2025:7050) providing updated rsync packages (version 3.2.5-3.el9) that fix these issues. The advisory covers multiple RHEL 9 variants and architectures, including x86_64, s390x, ppc64le, and aarch64. The update is classified with a moderate security impact by Red Hat Product Security.

Potential Impact

The vulnerabilities allow attackers to bypass intended path restrictions and potentially access or modify files outside the intended synchronization scope. The race condition in symbolic link handling could lead to inconsistent or insecure file operations. These issues may compromise system integrity or confidentiality during rsync operations. No known exploits in the wild have been reported at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released updated rsync packages (version 3.2.5-3.el9) that address these vulnerabilities. Users of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and its variants should apply the security update as detailed in Red Hat advisory RHSA-2025:7050 and the referenced article https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. Applying this official update is the recommended remediation. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor.
