AI-suggested
Red Hat recommends upgrading to GitPython version 3.1.59 or later, where the --separate-git-dir option is correctly included in the unsafe_git_clone_options denylist, effectively mitigating this vulnerability. If upgrading is not immediately possible, ensure that the separate_git_dir parameter is never populated from untrusted or user-controlled input. Applications should validate and sanitize any input passed to GitPython cloning methods or avoid exposing the separate_git_dir parameter to external callers entirely.
Description
CVE-2026-78677 is a path traversal vulnerability in GitPython versions before 3.1.59. It allows a remote attacker to manipulate the separate_git_dir parameter during repository cloning to create arbitrary Git directories outside the intended clone destination. This can lead to arbitrary directory creation and potentially arbitrary code execution via Git hooks if subsequent Git operations trigger hook execution on the redirected repository. The vulnerability requires that untrusted input be passed to the separate_git_dir parameter without proper validation. Red Hat has identified this issue and recommends upgrading to GitPython 3.1.59 or later to mitigate the risk.
