Description

We strongly recommend the following industry cybersecurity best practices. https://www.se.com/us/en/download/document/7EN52-0390/ * Locate control and safety system networks and remote devices behind firewalls and isolate them from the business network. * Install physical controls so no unauthorized personnel can access your industrial control and safety systems, components, peripheral equipment, and networks. * Place all controllers in locked cabinets and never leave them in the “Program” mode. * Never connect programming software to any network other than the network intended for that device. * Scan all methods of mobile data exchange with the isolated network such as CDs, USB drives, etc. before use in the terminals or any node connected to these networks. * Never allow mobile devices that have connected to any other network besides the intended network to connect to the safety or control networks without proper sanitation. * Minimize network exposure for all control system devices and systems and ensure that they are not accessible from the Internet. * When remote access is required, use secure methods, such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Recognize that VPNs may have vulnerabilities and should be updated to the most current version available. Also, understand that VPNs are only as secure as the connected devices. For more information refer to the Schneider Electric Recommended Cybersecurity Best Practices document.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CVE-2024-12703) impacts Schneider Electric RemoteConnect and SCADAPack™ x70 Utilities versions before 3.4.2 and is associated with CWE-502 (deserialization of untrusted data). The advisory emphasizes industry best practices such as isolating control and safety networks behind firewalls, restricting physical access, avoiding unauthorized network connections, sanitizing removable media, minimizing network exposure, and using secure remote access like VPNs. No direct patch or remediation details are provided in the source data.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability potentially allows exploitation via unsafe deserialization, which could lead to unauthorized code execution or system compromise in industrial control environments. However, no known exploits are reported in the wild. The impact is significant given the critical nature of control and safety systems but depends on the attacker's ability to access vulnerable systems.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is confirmed from the provided data. Users should follow Schneider Electric's recommended cybersecurity best practices: isolate control networks behind firewalls, enforce physical security controls, avoid connecting programming software to unintended networks, sanitize all removable media before use, minimize network exposure, and use secure remote access methods such as updated VPNs. Monitor Schneider Electric advisories for any future patches or updates.
