Description

RustDesk versions prior to 1.4.9 have a vulnerability where the server does not enforce the authorized connection scope for sessions. This allows a peer granted a limited session type (such as FileTransfer, PortForward, ViewCamera, or Terminal) to send control messages and login options intended only for full Remote sessions. An authenticated remote peer can exploit this flaw to perform actions beyond their granted permissions, potentially observing and controlling the host beyond the intended scope.

Technical Analysis

RustDesk before version 1.4.9 fails to enforce session scope restrictions on the server side. Specifically, peers with limited session types can bypass these restrictions and send control messages reserved for full Remote sessions. This missing scope check enables an authenticated remote peer to inject unauthorized control messages, thereby escalating their privileges and gaining broader access to the host than permitted by their session type.

Potential Impact

An authenticated remote peer with a limited session type can escalate their privileges by sending unauthorized control messages and login options. This can lead to unauthorized observation and control of the host system beyond the permissions originally granted, potentially compromising the confidentiality and integrity of the host environment.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in RustDesk version 1.4.9. Users should upgrade to version 1.4.9 or later to ensure proper enforcement of session connection scopes on the server side and prevent unauthorized privilege escalation.
