A security update has been released by SUSE to fix this vulnerability. Users should apply the official update to cyrus-sasl to remediate the heap buffer overflow and benefit from the improved cryptographic protections. No additional mitigation steps are indicated.

Description

A heap buffer overflow vulnerability (CVE-2026-107161) in the cyrus-sasl add_to_challenge() function allows a malicious server to crash or potentially compromise DIGEST-MD5 clients. This issue is addressed in a security update from SUSE. Additional fixes include replacing insecure MD5 with ephemeral HMAC-SHA256 and compatibility improvements with OpenSSL 3.
