AI-suggested
A fix is available in setuptools version 3.19.27 that normalizes both the on-disk filenames and MANIFEST.in patterns to a canonical Unicode form before matching. Users should upgrade to this fixed version to prevent exclusion bypass. Until upgrading, maintainers should be aware that MANIFEST.in exclusions for non-ASCII filenames may not work correctly on macOS filesystems and consider manually verifying source distributions for unintended files.
Description
A Unicode normalization mismatch in setuptools' handling of MANIFEST.in exclusions can cause files intended to be excluded from source distributions to be included instead. On macOS APFS and HFS+ filesystems, filenames stored in NFD form do not match exclusion patterns written in NFC form, leading to silent bypass of exclusion rules. This can result in unintended disclosure of private or secret files when publishing to PyPI. The issue affects non-ASCII filenames and is fixed in setuptools version 3.19.27.
