A fix is available in setuptools version 2.15.4_4. Users should upgrade to this version or later to remediate the vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.

Description

A path traversal vulnerability in the PackageIndex.download function of setuptools allows an attacker to write files to arbitrary filesystem locations. The flaw arises from insufficient sanitization of filenames derived from URLs, enabling os.path.join to be bypassed. This vulnerability was fixed in setuptools version 2.15.4_4. Exploitation could lead to arbitrary file write with the permissions of the running process, potentially escalating to remote code execution depending on context.
