A fix for this vulnerability exists upstream in the Brotli decoder source code, which changes the block-switch helper to return a specific error code instead of a boolean, preventing the out-of-bounds write. Users should apply the official patch or upgrade to Node.js versions that incorporate this fix once released. Until patched, monitoring for scanning activity from tools like node2shell-check may help detect reconnaissance. No vendor advisory or patch links were provided in the input; therefore, verify patch availability from official Node.js or Brotli sources.
Discussion
CVE-2026-111497, known as Node2Shell, HTTP2Shell, or Broccoli2Shell, is a remote code execution vulnerability in the Brotli decoder used by official, unmodified Node.js builds. A malformed Brotli compressed request body can trigger an out-of-bounds write, resulting in a shell on the target system. This has been reproduced on x86-64 systems against multiple Node.js targets including plain node:http, official slim images, Express 5.3.0, and Koa 3. The vulnerability arises from improper handling of block switches in Brotli streams, leading to memory corruption and arbitrary code execution. A public scanner is actively mapping Brotli-capable hosts, indicating reconnaissance activity preceding exploitation.

One bug, with three names (because of course it does) - Node2Shell, HTTP2Shell, and Broccoli2Shell... Anyway,
- A public checker (
node2shell-check/1.0, out of AS44620 / Turkey) is already hitting sensors cataloguing which hosts decompress Brotli at all. - Unlike PHP2Shell earlier this week - working RCE chain exists. ELLIO reproduced RCE in the lab against
Node 24.22.0on x86-64 - four targets (plain node:http, the official slim image as root, Express 5.3.0, Koa 3), official binaries, ASLR on, each returning a shell. - Official Node builds are non-PIE, so the offset is a per-build constant. Pin it once for a popular version, reuse it against every host on that version.
