Description

Spotweb versions through 1.5.8 have an OS command injection vulnerability in the runcommand NZB handler. This flaw allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands by publishing spots with malicious titles containing shell metacharacters. When a user downloads such a spot, the malicious title is passed unescaped to the exec() function, running commands with the privileges of the Spotweb PHP process.

Technical Analysis

Spotweb through version 1.5.8 contains an OS command injection vulnerability (CWE-78) in the runcommand NZB handler. Remote attackers can publish self-signed spots over Usenet with shell metacharacters embedded in the spot title. These titles are substituted unescaped for the $SPOTTITLE variable and passed directly to the exec() function when a user downloads the spot, resulting in arbitrary command execution as the Spotweb PHP process.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary OS commands on the server running Spotweb with the privileges of the PHP process. This can lead to full system compromise, data theft, or disruption of service.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid downloading spots from untrusted sources and consider restricting execution privileges of the Spotweb PHP process to minimize impact.
