Description

SurrealDB versions before 3.3.0 have an authorization bypass vulnerability that allows users with table-level write permissions to read fields normally restricted by SELECT permissions. This is achieved by exploiting JSON Patch operations to access hidden data fields. The vulnerability can lead to unauthorized data disclosure without requiring elevated privileges beyond write access.

Technical Analysis

SurrealDB prior to version 3.3.0 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability (CVE-2026-109341) where callers possessing table-level write permission can bypass SELECT field restrictions. The flaw arises because JSON Patch pointers are resolved against the unreduced record, enabling attackers to use PATCH copy or move operations to copy hidden fields into readable locations or leverage test mismatch errors as a disclosure oracle. This allows unauthorized reading of sensitive data fields that should be protected by SELECT restrictions.

Potential Impact

Attackers with write permissions on a table can read data fields that should be restricted, leading to unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information. The vulnerability compromises confidentiality (high impact) but does not affect integrity or availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in SurrealDB version 3.3.0. Users should upgrade to version 3.3.0 or later to remediate this authorization bypass vulnerability. No additional mitigations are indicated.
