Description

SurrealDB versions before 2.2.2 with scripting enabled have a vulnerability where recursion limits are not properly enforced when native functions contain embedded JavaScript that issues new queries. This flaw allows authenticated attackers to bypass recursion limits by chaining native and JavaScript function calls, potentially causing infinite recursion and exhausting server memory.

Technical Analysis

SurrealDB before version 2.2.2, when scripting is enabled, fails to enforce recursion limits properly in scenarios where native functions embed JavaScript that issues new queries. Authenticated attackers can exploit this by chaining native and JavaScript function calls to bypass recursion limits, triggering infinite recursion and leading to server memory exhaustion. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2025-71393 and is associated with CWE-674 (Improper Control of a Resource Through a Logic Time Bomb or Race Condition).

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause a denial of service by exhausting server memory through infinite recursion. It requires authenticated access but does not impact confidentiality or integrity directly. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 6.5 (medium severity), reflecting the impact on availability only.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is currently confirmed. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict or monitor scripting usage carefully and limit authenticated access to trusted users to reduce risk.
