Description

The MasterStudy LMS WordPress plugin versions before 3.7.55 contain a vulnerability in the student-enrolment feature where the plugin does not verify that a user targeted by an instructor has any relationship to that instructor. This flaw allows users with the Instructor role to overwrite the first name, last name, and public display name of any registered user, including administrators, which could enable impersonation and phishing attacks.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-88849 describes an authorization bypass vulnerability in the MasterStudy LMS WordPress plugin prior to version 3.7.55. The plugin's student-enrolment feature fails to verify that the targeted user is legitimately related to the requesting instructor. As a result, an attacker with the Instructor role can modify personal details (first name, last name, public display name) of any user on the site, including administrators. This can facilitate impersonation and phishing but does not directly impact confidentiality or availability.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows an attacker with the Instructor role to alter identifying information of any user, including administrators, potentially enabling impersonation and phishing attacks. There is no direct confidentiality or availability impact reported. The CVSS score is low (2.7), reflecting limited impact and the requirement for the attacker to have Instructor privileges.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fixed version 3.7.55 of the MasterStudy LMS WordPress plugin addresses this issue. Users should upgrade to version 3.7.55 or later to remediate the vulnerability. No other mitigations are specified.
