UBUNTU-CVE-2026-56374

0
High
Published: 07/08/2026 (07/08/2026, 14:17:00 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: imagemagick

Description

ImageMagick versions before 7.1.2-19 contain a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in the FTXT encoder caused by missing boundary checks when parsing ftxt:format. This flaw allows remote attackers to trigger out-of-bounds reads by crafting malicious FTXT image files, potentially leading to denial of service or information disclosure.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in ImageMagick affects versions prior to 7.1.2-19 and involves a heap buffer overflow in the FTXT encoder. The root cause is the lack of boundary checks during parsing of the ftxt:format, which can be exploited remotely by supplying specially crafted FTXT image files. Exploitation can result in out-of-bounds reads, leading to denial of service or unauthorized information disclosure. The vulnerability does not require privileges or user interaction beyond opening a malicious file.

Potential Impact

Remote attackers can cause denial of service or information disclosure by exploiting the heap buffer overflow in the FTXT encoder of vulnerable ImageMagick versions. There is no indication of code execution or privilege escalation from the provided data.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in ImageMagick version 7.1.2-19. Users should upgrade to this version or later to remediate the vulnerability. Since this is not a cloud service, manual patching is required. Patch status is confirmed by the version boundary stated in the description.
