Description

CVE-2026-42492 is a vulnerability in Xenstore related to the management of domain state information. An error path in the handling of the VIRQ_DOM_EXC virtual IRQ can cause the underlying bitmap to be torn down even if it was not set up. This flaw can be triggered by unprivileged domains, potentially causing denial of service. The vulnerability does not impact confidentiality or integrity but can cause availability disruption.

Technical Analysis

Xenstore uses a mechanism to track domains appearing and disappearing via the XEN_DOMCTL_get_domain_state operation. The bitmap management for this operation is linked to the binding of the VIRQ_DOM_EXC virtual IRQ. Due to an error path, the bitmap can be improperly torn down even when not initialized. Unprivileged domains can trigger this error path, leading to a denial of service condition by disrupting the domain state tracking mechanism.

Potential Impact

This vulnerability allows unprivileged domains to cause a denial of service by triggering an error path that tears down the bitmap used for domain state tracking. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, but availability of the Xenstore service or domain state information may be affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, monitor for updates from the Xen project or relevant vendor advisories. No official fix or workaround is currently documented.
