Description

ZenML version 0.94.6 contains a remote code execution vulnerability in its CloudpickleMaterializer component. This flaw allows attackers with write access to a shared artifact store to execute arbitrary code by replacing a stored artifact.pkl file with a malicious cloudpickle payload. The vulnerability arises from the unsanitized use of cloudpickle.load(), which executes the malicious __reduce__ method embedded in the payload during artifact materialization.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in ZenML 0.94.6 (CVE-2026-68772) is a remote code execution issue in the CloudpickleMaterializer component. Attackers who have write permissions to a shared artifact store can plant a crafted cloudpickle payload in the artifact.pkl file. When any user or pipeline materializes this artifact, the unsanitized cloudpickle.load() call executes the malicious __reduce__ method, allowing arbitrary system command execution. This is a deserialization vulnerability classified under CWE-502.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation enables an attacker with write access to the shared artifact store to execute arbitrary code on the system of any user or pipeline that materializes the compromised artifact. This can lead to full system compromise, data loss, or disruption of pipeline operations. The CVSS v3.1 score is 8.0 (High), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, required privileges, user interaction, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict write access to the shared artifact store to trusted users only. Avoid materializing artifacts from untrusted or unverified sources. Monitor vendor channels for updates or official patches addressing this vulnerability.
