zipdump.py: Metadata Encoding, (Fri, Jul 31st)

Source SANS ISC Handlers Diary

Description

I was asked for help with a problem similar to the following.

Impact

There is no direct security impact or exploit associated with this update. The enhancement improves the accuracy and usability of the zipdump.py tool when analyzing ZIP files with metadata encoded in different character sets. It addresses parsing and display issues but does not introduce or fix a vulnerability.

Defensive guidance

No security vulnerability or exploit is described, so no remediation or patching is required. Users of zipdump.py should update to the latest version to benefit from improved metadata encoding handling. No urgent action is necessary.

Summary

The zipdump.py tool, used for analyzing ZIP files, has been updated to better handle metadata encoding issues. ZIP file metadata such as filenames and comments can be encoded in ASCII (CP437) or UTF-8, indicated by specific flags in the ZIP specification. When the encoding is unknown or the ZIP file is malformed, zipdump.py can now use a new --metadata_encoding option to specify the codec for decoding metadata bytes into strings. This allows correct interpretation of filenames in various encodings, including UTF-8 for non-ASCII characters like Simplified Chinese. The update also includes decoding of flag bits into readable text to assist in identifying the encoding used. This enhancement improves the tool's ability to analyze ZIP files with diverse metadata encodings.
