The Iranian threat actor Nimbus Manticore has expanded its operations, targeting defense, telecommunications, and aviation sectors in Western Europe. The group uses sophisticated spear-phishing techniques, impersonating HR recruiters to lure victims to fake career portals. Their toolset includes the MiniJunk backdoor and MiniBrowse stealer, which have evolved to employ advanced evasion techniques like multi-stage DLL sideloading, heavy obfuscation, and code signing. The malware infrastructure leverages Azure App Services for resilient command and control. Nimbus Manticore's recent activities demonstrate increased focus on stealth, operational security, and expanding their targeting to align with Iranian strategic priorities.
Recent versions of Zloader, a Zeus-based modular trojan, have introduced significant enhancements to its functionality. These updates include improved obfuscation techniques, anti-analysis strategies, and network communication methods. The malware now supports WebSockets and has modified its DNS tunneling protocol, replacing TLS encryption with a custom algorithm. New LDAP functions have been added to improve network discovery and lateral movement capabilities. Zloader continues to evolve its evasion tactics, including checks for process integrity levels to avoid detection in sandbox environments. The malware has also removed its Domain Generation Algorithm and made changes to its static configuration format. These updates demonstrate Zloader's ongoing development as a sophisticated tool for initial access and potential ransomware deployment.

A recent analysis of a suspicious trojan loader reveals similarities to the APT-C-00 (Ocean Lotus) group, a government-backed hacker organization targeting East Asian companies and government agencies. The sample, a DLL file with excellent evasion capabilities, uses hash algorithms to dynamically obtain API functions. It creates a mutex for single-instance execution, validates command-line parameters, adds itself to the registry for persistence, and sets up a VEH exception handler. The loader employs module hollowing to replace code in certmgr.dll with shellcode that reflectively loads the Havoc RAT. The tactics and development environment align with Ocean Lotus' known techniques, including the use of Mingw-w64 and similar initialization processes.

DeerStealer is a sophisticated information-stealing malware that targets a wide range of user and system data. It employs deception techniques, persistence mechanisms, and rootkit-like capabilities to evade detection and maintain stealth on compromised systems. The malware uses signed executables, legitimate DLLs, and multi-stage execution to perform its malicious activities. It establishes persistence through scheduled tasks and employs auto-elevated COM objects to bypass User Account Control. DeerStealer's adaptive design allows it to switch C2 servers and use obfuscated files for effective data exfiltration. The malware is actively sold and supported through dark-web forums and Telegram channels, posing a significant threat to both individuals and organizations.
