The first half of 2025 saw a 1.4-fold increase in ransomware attacks in Japan compared to the previous year, with 68 confirmed cases. Small and medium-sized enterprises remained the primary targets, with manufacturing being the most affected industry. The ransomware group Qilin emerged as the most active threat, responsible for eight incidents. A new group, Kawa4096, appeared in late June, targeting Japanese companies. The analysis also details the KaWaLocker ransomware, including its configuration, encryption methods, and the emergence of KaWaLocker 2.0 with enhanced features. The continued evolution and intensification of ransomware activities in Japan highlight the need for increased cybersecurity measures across various industries.

Over 800 N-able servers left unpatched against critical flaws

In a recent red team engagement, the client's attack surface was so well-defended that after months of effort, the only system we managed to compromise was a lone server, which was apparently isolated from the rest of the network. Or so we thought.
One developer had been using that server for remote development with Cursor. This setup is becoming increasingly popular: developers run AI agents remotely to protect their local machines.
But when we dug deeper into how Cursor works, we discovered something unsettling. By pivoting through the remote server, we could actually compromise the developer's local machine.
This wasn't a Cursor-specific flaw. The root cause lies in the Remote-SSH extension that Cursor inherits directly from VS Code. Which means the attack path we uncovered could extend across the entire VS Code remote development ecosystem, putting any developer who connects to an untrusted server at risk.

Threat actors are actively exploiting Microsoft 365's Direct Send feature to deliver phishing emails, bypassing perimeter security solutions by routing malicious messages through trusted infrastructure. This technique requires no credentials, only knowledge of the target domain and valid recipient addresses. The attack process involves identifying organizational domains, crafting emails impersonating internal users, and delivering them through Microsoft 365's infrastructure. Recent campaigns have successfully harvested credentials and established footholds within targeted environments. Attackers use automated tools to generate convincing business-themed lures, often utilizing PDF and DOCX attachments with QR codes or obfuscated HTML leading to phishing pages. The abuse of Direct Send represents a critical gap in email security defenses, particularly for organizations relying heavily on email communications.

Interlock, a relatively new ransomware group first observed in September 2024, has gained prominence in 2025 as an opportunistic ransomware operator. Unlike traditional Ransomware-as-a-Service models, Interlock operates without affiliates or public advertisements. The group conducts double extortion campaigns, leveraging compromised websites and multi-stage social engineering techniques to deliver payloads. Interlock's attack chain involves initial access through fake software updaters, execution of PowerShell scripts, and the use of custom remote access trojans. The group has targeted various sectors across North America and Europe, including education, healthcare, technology, and government entities. Notable attacks include the DaVita breach in April 2025 and the ransomware attack on the city of St. Paul, Minnesota in July 2025.
