The operation leveraged DLL sideloading as the primary delivery mechanism and used Google Drive for command-and-control communications to hide within trusted services. Infrastructure analysis identified connections to China Unicom's backbone network, and operational patterns suggest a functioning software organization with maintained build pipelines and careful operational security. Security researchers have uncovered a sophisticated cyber espionage operation deploying two previously undocumented malware families, OctLurk and SilkLurk, targeting government and public-sector organizations across Central Asia and the Middle East. Two newly identified backdoors, OctLurk and SilkLurk, have been targeting government organizations across Central Asia since January 2025. A sophisticated spear phishing campaign targets professionals in the Eurasian unmanned aviation sector, timed to coincide with the XIII Eurasian International Forum 'Unmanned Aviation 2026' in Moscow. The attack delivers malicious archives containing Rust-based executables disguised as legitimate documents from the Russian Aeronautical Information Center. The malware displays aviation-themed decoy documents in Russian while collecting system information including hostnames, volume serial numbers, network adapter details, and environment variables. Collected data is encrypted via XOR and exfiltrated to a C2 server over HTTPS. The malware subsequently downloads and executes a second-stage payload using AES-256 decryption. The Silent Lynx APT group has been conducting espionage campaigns targeting diplomatic entities and critical infrastructure in Central Asia, Russia, and China. Two major campaigns were identified: one focused on Russia-Azerbaijan relations and another on China-Central Asia relations. The group used various malware tools including PowerShell scripts, .NET implants, and C++ reverse shells. They leveraged spear-phishing emails with malicious attachments and GitHub-hosted payloads. Cavalry Werewolf, a malicious actor group, targeted Russian state agencies and enterprises in the energy, mining, and manufacturing sectors from May to August 2025. The attackers used targeted phishing emails, posing as Kyrgyz government officials, to gain initial access. They employed custom malware, including FoalShell reverse shells and StallionRAT, controlled via Telegram. The group impersonated or compromised real email accounts from Kyrgyz agencies. Their arsenal includes various versions of FoalShell (Go, C++, C#) and StallionRAT (Go, PowerShell, Python). The attackers executed commands for system reconnaissance, file uploads, and SOCKS5 proxying. Evidence suggests potential expansion to targets in Tajikistan and Middle Eastern countries.
