A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's hv_netvsc driver could cause a kernel panic due to a NULL pointer dereference during namespace deletion involving virtual functions (VF). The issue arises when the VF NIC is moved between namespaces, leading to improper handling in the kernel's device exit routines. This flaw has been assigned CVE-2025-38683 and is rated medium severity with a CVSS score of 5.5. A patch is available and included in updated Linux kernel packages. Users should update and reboot to apply the fix.

The vulnerability CVE-2025-38683 in the Linux kernel's hv_netvsc driver involves a kernel panic triggered during the deletion of a network namespace when a virtual function (VF) network interface card (NIC) is moved between namespaces. The existing code moves the VF NIC to a new namespace upon receiving NETDEV_REGISTER on the netvsc NIC. During namespace deletion, the kernel calls default_device_exit_batch() and default_device_exit_net(), but when the netvsc NIC is moved back and registered to the default namespace, it also brings the VF NIC back. This causes the kernel's for_each_netdev_safe loop to fail to detect the end of the device list, resulting in a NULL pointer dereference and kernel panic. The issue has been fixed in updated Linux kernel versions.
