A critical vulnerability in the Linux kernel's NFS daemon (nfsd) involving a reference count leak in the nfsd_set_fh_dentry() function has been resolved. The issue arises when NFSv3 or v2 clients use a filehandle from the NFSv4 pseudo root filesystem, causing an incorrect reference count decrement that can lead to use-after-free and potential denial of service. This bug requires a client to craft an invalid filehandle, as normal NFS usage does not expose this condition. The fix delays assignment to the internal structure until after error conditions are checked, preventing the reference count leak.
