CVE-2026-22980 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's NFS server daemon (nfsd) related to improper locking for the v4_end_grace state. Writing to v4_end_grace can race with server shutdown, potentially causing use-after-free memory access. The issue arises because the nfsd_mutex cannot be held across the nfsd4_end_grace() call due to potential deadlocks. A new locking flag protected by client_lock was introduced to ensure safe client tracking calls and prevent restarting work after shutdown. This vulnerability affects multiple versions of the linux-aws kernel prior to specific fixed versions. A patch is available and included in updated Linux kernel packages. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.8, indicating high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.
