A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's USB gadget function (ffs_ep0_read) was resolved. The flaw involved copying more bytes to userspace than were actually received during short control OUT transfers on endpoint 0, potentially leaking uninitialized kernel memory. This behavior deviated from USB control-transfer specifications and affected in-tree USB device controllers. The issue has been fixed in updated Linux kernel versions.

The Linux kernel's usb gadget function ffs_ep0_read() allocated a control-OUT data buffer using kmalloc() with the length specified in the USB Setup packet, then copied the entire length to userspace regardless of the actual number of bytes received. On short control OUT transfers, fewer bytes than the allocated length are received, causing the copy_to_user() call to copy uninitialized slab memory beyond the actual data. This could leak kernel memory contents to the FunctionFS daemon. The vulnerability affects USB device controllers that produce short ep0 OUT completions, such as dwc2. The issue has been resolved by ensuring only the actual received bytes are copied to userspace.
