A vulnerability in the Linux kernel bonding driver allowed CAN (Controller Area Network) devices to be enslaved to a bonding master, causing a kernel paging request crash due to null-pointer dereference. This occurs because bonding modifies network device states assuming Ethernet-like behavior, which is incompatible with CAN devices' architecture. The issue has been resolved with a patch that refuses to enslave CAN devices, preventing the crash.

The Linux kernel bonding driver improperly allowed CAN devices to be enslaved to a bonding master interface. During this process, the bonding driver alters network device states to fit Ethernet aggregation models, but CAN devices use a different Layer 2 architecture relying on CAN mid-layer private data structures. Because bonding does not initialize or maintain these CAN-specific structures, operations on the partially enslaved CAN interface lead to null-pointer dereferences, causing kernel crashes. The vulnerability was reported by syzbot and is tracked as CVE-2026-63990. A patch has been released to refuse enslaving CAN devices, addressing the root cause.
