A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's xfrm subsystem (CVE-2026-64009) involves an out-of-bounds write caused by an underflow in the xfrm_state_mtu() function. This occurs when a local unprivileged user configures an IPv4 ESP tunnel with specific parameters, leading to a negative length value used in memory operations. The issue has been resolved in updated Linux kernel versions.

The Linux kernel's xfrm_state_mtu() function returns a 32-bit unsigned integer but performs arithmetic in modulo-2^32 space, subtracting an attacker-controlled sum from a small MTU value. This can cause an underflow to a near-2^32 value. When this value is used as a signed integer in esp_output(), it results in a negative length (esp.tfclen) that is sign-extended and passed to memset(), causing an out-of-bounds write. The vulnerability can be triggered by a local unprivileged user installing an IPv4 ESP tunnel Security Association with a large authentication key and specific MTU and padding settings. This flaw has been fixed in Linux kernel updates.
