A high severity vulnerability (CVE-2026-64093) in the Linux kernel's batman-adv subsystem was resolved by replacing a double timer deletion approach with a single, more reliable timer shutdown function. This fix prevents potential issues related to timer re-arming during cleanup. The vulnerability affects multiple versions of the linux-azure kernel prior to specified 7.0.0 series versions. A patch is available and included in recent Ubuntu Linux kernel updates.

The vulnerability in the Linux kernel's batman-adv tp_meter component involved improper handling of timer cleanup in the batadv_tp_sender_cleanup() function. Previously, two calls (timer_delete_sync() and timer_delete()) were used to prevent the timer handler from re-arming itself, relying on a sending status flag. This was replaced with a single call to timer_shutdown_sync(), which both waits for any running timer callback to complete and permanently disables the timer, ensuring unconditional prevention of re-arming. This change addresses potential race conditions or improper timer state that could be exploited. The issue affects linux-azure kernel versions prior to multiple 7.0.0-xx.xx releases as listed. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 8.8 (high severity) with attack vector: adjacent network, low attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and impacts confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Ubuntu has released patches in linux-azure kernel packages to remediate this issue.
