A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's batman-adv subsystem could lead to a NULL pointer dereference when handling mesh interfaces that become decoupled. This flaw has been resolved in updated Linux kernel versions. The issue could cause a denial of service due to kernel crashes. The Linux kernel's batman-adv mesh networking subsystem contained a vulnerability where, without holding the rtnl_lock, a primary hard interface (hardif) might be retrieved and then decoupled from its mesh interface (meshif). In this scenario, the meshif pointer from the hardif is set to NULL, but the meshif itself still exists. The kernel code failed to check if the meshif pointer was non-NULL before sending ARP requests, leading to a NULL pointer dereference. This flaw could cause kernel crashes (denial of service). The issue affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to 7.0.0-28.28 and related variants. The vulnerability has been fixed in updated kernel releases.
