A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's macsec_encrypt() function could cause a 12-byte heap out-of-bounds read when the MAC header is unset during packet transmission on certain paths. This flaw leads to reading memory out of bounds and leaking it on the network frame's outer source/destination MAC address. The issue affects multiple specific versions of the linux-azure kernel. The vulnerability has been resolved by changing the code to use skb_eth_hdr() instead of eth_hdr() to safely access the L2 header.

The Linux kernel macsec_encrypt() function reads the Ethernet header via eth_hdr(skb), which relies on skb->mac_header being set. On the AF_PACKET SOCK_RAW + PACKET_QDISC_BYPASS transmit path, the MAC header can be unset, causing eth_hdr(skb) to resolve to an out-of-bounds memory address (skb->head + (u16)~0). This results in a 12-byte heap over-read that is also transmitted on the wire as the frame's outer source/destination MAC address. Kernel Address Sanitizer (KASAN) reports this as a slab-out-of-bounds read in macsec_start_xmit() on kernel 6.0. The fix uses skb_eth_hdr(), which accesses the L2 header at skb->data, avoiding the unset mac_header issue. This fix was introduced by commit 96cc4b69581d.
