The issue occurs because the upper rpc_clnt pointer is not properly pinned across the delayed TLS connect_worker, leading to a reference to freed memory during a TLS handshake failure. This can cause a refcount underflow and potential instability. The fix involves taking and releasing a reference on the upper rpc_clnt in the TLS connect path to prevent premature freeing.
