A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's dm-pcache component allows out-of-bounds read and write operations due to improper validation of geometry fields from on-disk cache_info metadata. Specifically, the cache_segs_init() function iterates based on an unvalidated n_segs field, and get_seg_id() uses segment IDs from metadata that can be controlled by a user with CAP_SYS_ADMIN privileges. This can lead to out-of-bounds access of cache segments and potentially wild pointer dereferences. The issue is resolved by rejecting n_segs values exceeding the device segment count and out-of-range segment IDs before use. Valid metadata is not affected.
