A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's core scheduling mechanism caused corruption of the rq->core_pick state under certain conditions, leading to potential NULL pointer dereferences and kernel deadlocks. This issue arises when task selections on the same core interleave due to dropped locks during dispatch, causing inconsistent selection states and hard hangs. The flaw has been fixed by ensuring that task selection retries if the rq lock is released during dispatch, maintaining consistent state under a continuously held lock.
