A vulnerability in the Linux kernel SMB client was fixed that involved out-of-bounds (OOB) read and write operations due to unvalidated DataOffset values in the coalesce_t2() function. The function computed data pointers directly from server-supplied DataOffset fields without validating them against buffer boundaries, allowing pointers to be pushed before or beyond the buffer limits. This could lead to overwriting header fields or out-of-bounds heap reads and writes. The issue was present since 2005 and was resolved by adding proper lower- and upper-bound checks before memory operations.
