A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Ceph client was resolved that involved improper validation of OSD extent maps during sparse reads. The flaw allowed a malicious or compromised authenticated Ceph OSD peer to send malformed sparse-read replies with extent maps that could cause the client to advance its data cursor beyond the intended buffer, triggering a kernel assertion failure and crashing the client. The fix involves rejecting sparse extent maps that overflow, move backwards, overlap, or extend outside the original request range before advancing the cursor.
