A high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's netfilter nft_ct subsystem involving improper handling of custom connection tracking expectations has been resolved. The flaw originated from invalid calls to nf_ct_helper_ext_add() for confirmed conntracks, causing kernel crashes (splats). The fix involved moving custom expectation support to an internal connection tracking helper and restricting expectation creation to avoid stale entries and incorrect list pointers. This change also relaxes expectation creation failure handling to a best-effort basis. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 7.8 and affects local attackers with low privileges, potentially leading to high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts.
