A high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's BPF subsystem involves improper handling of scalar IDs during sign-extending narrowing stack fills. This flaw can cause the BPF verifier to incorrectly assume register values, potentially leading to out-of-bounds memory access. The issue arises when a spilled scalar register is reloaded with sign extension, causing mismatched scalar IDs and values between registers. This vulnerability has been resolved by dropping the shared scalar ID at the sign-extension site to prevent incorrect value assumptions.
